Portable Underwater LED Light

Would like to have an underwater LED light, but not put holes in the boat. So am looking at portable units that might plug into cig lighter plug. Noting that power draw for these lights varies quite a bit, and don't want to get a power hog. Anyone with experience of specific products? Like, dislike? Just something I can plug in, toss overboard, and watch the fish for a while. Pull out of the water before we shut down for the evening. TIA

Look at dive lights.


Recent (last 5-10 years) dive lights are mostly lithium battery, usually 18650, powered because this delivers more brightness in a small light, typically 600 lumens or more. I do not believe this amount of light is necessary -- or even useful -- for most underwater tasks and observation.


I still have several DGX600 and DGX800 lights from Dive Gear Express, that use 18650 cells. Some of them have failed, one within warranty and two others not, and I no longer recommend them. They are 600 and 800 lumen lights and are very bright.



Dive lights that use AAA, AA, or C cells are still available and IMO are safer and more practical. I have the Princeton Tec Impact XL, a 120 lumen LED light that runs on 4 AA batteries. I recently bought this so it's too early to tell how it will work out.


Underwater Kinetics makes several highly regarded dive lights, among them the SL3 and SL4, that use C batteries and are quite bright.

We have a very bright underwater light for fishing. It plugs into a USB outlet (draws about 4A at 12V) and has a 5m long cord. We lower the light in between our hulls and it lights up the entire underwater boat and looms quite wide.

I did as well. Several threads on permanent-mounted underwater lights. Like the title says, I am looking for something that doesn't require a hole in the boat.

If someone has one they've used and are happy with. Maybe we can actually have a thread on Portable Underwater LED fishing lights.

I currently own PrinceTec dive lights and am very happy with them.

Have also been a decades long user of Underwater Kinetics lights and find them to be quality, well made, durable products.

I have a couple hook up to battery or outlet
Usually less than $50

This looks like a good option and if you don’t have a quick/easy access to battery terminals, a cigarette lighter plug can be installed in the place of the battery terminal clips.

My battery is convenient to the cockpit area and is the shortest path to the water, so I would probably keep the terminal connectors.
