Paging the unlucky, laptop data survive after lightning strike?

I know that many, especially of the US, have been hit by lightning on their boats. I've heard that it wiped the electronics, but I was curious if anyone knew if laptop hard disk drives and their data was also destroyed?

I've heard plenty of theory, but I would like to hear from experience...

Thank you!
