I guess it won't be long before this kind of system filters down to the masses -- the future.

Could certainly be a great enhancement to watchkeeping. It's impossible to keep a 100% visual watch and most sailors don't even try. On a dark night the effectiveness of the visual watch with regard to unlit UFO's may be very low in any case. But different UFO's won't be picked up by radar either. So we just hope that we don't run into them.

I think there is nothing inherently expensive about this technology. I think it's inherently simpler than the technology we now see in some cars, which can for example steer the car to stay in your lane. Will be very cool to see how it develops.

One inherently expensive part is a thermographic camera. Thermal sensors have been around for several decades now, but for some reason haven't followed the Moore's Law like the rest of electronics did. Still low-res and high-$.

It's a worthy project though
