Re: OpenPlotter project

Okay partners--let's recap

Rpi3
is working headless
I can connect using realvnc thru an iPad and iPhone. (But not with web ssh, or ms remote lite)
Rpi3 openplotter/ocpn has good gps and Ais
Gps and ais are added under USB manager tab

Xinutop laptop(s)
Load xinutop thru USB (love it so far!)
Both laptops appear to connect thru to pi (10.10.10.1, see prior screenshots) based on network icon in lower right. this loads automatically upon reboot, takes a couple of minutes but seems to work
Neither gets gps/ais data ( having blindly tried every IP address on the op wifi ap page) via the connections tab
Tried the Bram/petter terminal adjustments to no avail

is there something in openplotter I could have inadvertently changed?
Btw this is still the noob version of openplotter, I tried to download the non-noob version and it wanted to extract to more than 250gb--something was not right there

Is there a port I need to set up for the output in op? I'm fishing here....

The difficult we do in a day, the impossible takes a little longer

Thanks again for perseverance and persistence..

Cheers, John

Re: OpenPlotter project

Morning update,
Reloaded op on the pi.

In general wifi connections are working. I can get in headless-- how do I RESiZE screen? It's too narrow.... btw I could not find any folder with "margin-bottom"

New info---the gps input for ocpn on the rpi is through the ocpn connections tab, not the op(e.g. The USB tab or the nema tab.) In the op USB tab I can add the gps, but nothing goes through to ocpn. Can this be the stumbling block??

Best, John

Ignore new info above-- I now have ocpn on pi running off of data feed from op---both ais and gps. On two different laptops, and neither can get the op data feed into xinutop setup...notwithstanding the wifi connection is made, and the same op addresses are used.

Still could use info on how to resize pi image....

Re: OpenPlotter project

Petter and Bram,
here's a special surprise--

I turned on the NON-xinutop ocpn on a laptop, and it worked like falling off a log... gps and Ais from the pi, just like you said it would. Exact same settings used in the connections tab of xinutop version and I get nada.

Soooooo...
Do I abandon xinutop? Reload different version? Am I missing a setting? Is there a network settings in xinutop that I can't find?

We are getting close!

Cheers, John

Hi Guys

Richard,

I don't know if the usb manager is needed.

Look at nmea 0183 tab. There are in the 0.9.0 version the settings of the SDR dongle in Tools left upper corner on the menu bar.

Try the old settings and fine tune and see if it works.

I have several dsr dongles and both work.

Regards,

Re: OpenPlotter project

Hi, Can anyone tell me if it is possible to do the initial NOOBS Build Headless? On one of the other Pi forums, someone commented that you could simply leave only one of the various flavours on the NOOBS card, and then that would be built by default.

I have access to an HDMI TV, but no keyboard etc... so would prefer to just VNC in and work from my laptop. Is this possible?

Cheers, PT

Re: OpenPlotter project

I believe yes. The trick is to set in the config.txt file the acesspoint details so that the openplotter wlan is active and then join this AP from eg the laptop and do the rest through VNC.
At least that's how it worked for me.

Good luck

Re: OpenPlotter project

I've edited config.txt, and booted up the Pi. It's been running for 20 minutes but there is no sign of OpenPlotter Wifi zone. How long should I wait before concluding that it's not working?

FWIW, I used SDFormatter to format my SD Card. I used WinRAR to unpack openplotter_rpi_v0.8.0.noobs.zip to my Windows Laptop. It created a folder called NOOBS_v1_9_2. Inside this folder under /os/OpenPlotter I found boot.tar.xz and used 7Zip to Open this archive, and then "Opened Inside" to open boot.tar and then "Edit" to open config.txt for edit. This opened up with Notepad, but because of the compression it did not display as I expected. I then went through and pressed enter at each # to get everything on it's own line, and then uncommented out the parts for Headless as per the Docs and then saved my edited config.txt to the boot.tar archive, and then boot.tar to the boot.tar.xz. Finally I copied all of the files inside NOOBS_v1_9_2 (but not the Folder itself) to my SDCard.

When I first fired up the Pi, I was concerned that after 5 minutes or so, the Red LED was just constant and nothing appeared to be happening, so shut it off and looked at the SD Card, where I found that it had been reformatted with the "Recovery" Partition etc...

Fearing that I had jumped the gun, I reformatted the SD Card and did the whole process again. Half an hour on and no sign of anything.
Colour me stumped.

Appreciate any insight etc....

Cheers, PT

Re: OpenPlotter project

  1. when running xinutop, are you able to connect to internet through a access point ? if so your network cards are recognized and working
  2. Are your OP connected to the network through a cable with rj45 or is it standalone and only acting as an access point using wifi from op ?
  3. If other pc's is capable of getting nmea data from op, but not the ones loaded with xinutop, it seems that networking on the xintop pc is not working due to not recognized network card, not connected to the OP or maybe a problem with your usb stick loaded with xinutop. Try to load xinutop to a new usb stick of good quality.

Re: OpenPlotter project

Petter,
Interesting that I failed test #1--- both laptops can reach my hotspot easily under win7, so I presume hardware is okay. Under xinutop Neither laptop sees my hotspot , though does see other wifis. is there a setting issue with wicd network mgr in Xinutop? It's a head scratcher.
Happy new year John

Hey,

I had to format my sd card and I am now trying to setup the open plotter 0.8 on my Raspberry 1 Rev.B.

The SDR-AIS option is still greyed out.
I got it working last year (see quote), after Sailoog updated the openplotter.py on github.
Unfortunately I don't remember, how or what exactly I had to update to get my
SDR-Terratec Cinergy T Stick RC (Rev.3)-Dongle working.

Does anybody know by chance?

regards,
max
