Openplotter seems promising but I am having serious growing pains. Many thanks in advance, John
Automatic start is in the OpenPlotter menu, almost last page. You can use start with full screen or not.

You can find the OpenPlotter cable ethernet address in the item Wifi AP
If you like to have a fixed IP that is also possible.

If you install VNC client on other systems you can use the desktop of the pi remote.

On every system with a VNC client.

wireless you have to conect the Wifi accespoint of the Pi. And then Ip address 10.10.10.1 wireless. Port is 10110 or 10109

And if the like to install Ais, Gps, echo etc. use the Multiplexer under NMEA183.

Simple add a serial port, systems and the right Baudrate.

All this works great.

If you like to the SignalK items. The same but then with :3000 behind the Ip adress.

Bram

Re: OpenPlotter project

Petter and Bram,
Thx for your insights!

As a result I have made progress! I can view open plotter on the pi thru Vnc connections on both an iPad and iPhone. And I can get gps and ais signals into the pi and onto the pi's opencpn. All good.

What i am still stumped by is how to connect the xinutop opencpn on the laptop to the pi data. Xinutop is connected to the open-plotter network on the pi, the icon in lower right corner says so.... I try to connect to it via remmina, using all the pi addresses in the op wifi ap tab, as well as ssh, rdp and vnc options with no success. I am pretty low on the xinutop learning curve... what am I doing wrong?

Also petter, xinutop opencpn is solid...how solid is a wifi data connection of gps data?

Thanks again, John

Re: OpenPlotter project

You are on the cable ethernet connection ? And is the network connection working with Xinutop ?

Look at connections in OpeCPN. New > network > UDP >Ip adress of the Pi. and then as port 10110 and with the latest OpenPlotter version it is 10109.

So it works here. You now have the GPS etc data on the OpenCPN working via Xinotop.

If you have a wireless connection that is working. The IP is then 10.10.10.1 and same port.

I have just tried the Xinutop in combination with my Raspberry Pi with OpenPlotter. But now for testing it for a wireless connection with a small Wifi dongle.

This also works.

But you have to adjust some settings.

Like wlan0 en the right driver. In my case it was nl80211.

WPA1/2. And of course with the right OpenPlotter Wifi password.

The Ip adres of xinotop was not 10.10.10.1, but in my case 10.10.10.168. But shows after you have made the connection.

Put these in OpenCPn and you will see the GPS and AIS data appear.

Re: OpenPlotter project

Bram,
I have tried those variations (at least attempted to...) to no avail. See attached screen shots. I think I have the right ip addresses. What am I missing?

I am not sure what you are referring to with "right driver". When in wifi ap I cannot change the parameters when access point is enabled .

Also can I connect the pi directly to the laptop with an rj45 cable.? I am confused on that one, it would be my preferred connection but I only get wifi connection now

Thx for your patience and perseverance!

Re: OpenPlotter project

Here is what I do to get the Wireless connection:

start Xinotop

put in the usb wifi dongle before you login

with the putting in of the usb dongle you will see if the thing is recognized.

then login

goto the network icon click this on

now the hidden thing. Click on the small arrow just right of refresh

Preferences

wireless wlan 0

advanced settings WPA driver in my case nl80211

if this does not work try another one.

now back and refresh and you will see the wifi in your area and among these the Raspberry Pi OpenPlotter access point.

then is just like any other wireless connection.

Look at the notice of the ip adress beginning 10.10.10. ?. In my case it was 10.10.10.168. That is the IP you need in combination with the port 10110 or 10109

There is no need to change anything in OpenPlotter setup.

Bram

Re: OpenPlotter project

ThxBram!

I think it's the last (the easy) part that is tripping me up. The xinutop laptop is connected to op. But When in the laptop ocpn connections tab I am unable to make a connection to the plotter info. I have tried the ip addresses in the op wifi ap page to no avail. The wicd network manager page says I'm connected to openplotter at 10.10.10.1. At 100%.

What am i missing?
Thx

If the connection is working and the netwerk items on other systems is also working on other systems it must also work in OpenCPN.

the setting in OpenCPN is simply:

add connection >udp > fill in the IP address 10.10.10.1 and the port 10110 or 10109 for OpenCPN 0.9.0 Alpha

ok etc

and then you must sea the GPS bars appearing in OpenCPN.

See if it works now.

Bram,
Thx for your patience!

Screen on left is my interpretation of your directions. Screen on right tells me that I am connected to open plotter. I have screwed something up because it's still not working..

What am I missing?

Re: OpenPlotter project

Sorry I put you an the wrong foot!

It is a tcp connection not utp.

Filter NMEA off

control checksum switched on

receive input on this port

accept only string on

Ip 10.10.10.1 port 10110 or 10109

So it must work.

Re: OpenPlotter project

No worries!
It would be grand if life were so easy.., but alas there is still no joy. ....

There must be some switch somewhere....

Btw can the pi be connected directly to the laptop using a rj45 cable?

Thx,John

Re: OpenPlotter project

Yes, they will easily connect if they are connected to the same network range and same switch/network.

Using a normal RJ45 directly will not work without a switch in-between.

You can do this with a special cable called Crossover cable

Connect Two Computers using a Crossover Cable

But really, you are close, do a firm analysis of what you are doing and find the small mistake and everything will just "work"

Re: OpenPlotter project

You could try this - on the Pi, in the web browser address bar put in 10.10.10.1:10110
There should be a page with ever changing text which is the nmea data.
Then on your laptop do the same, if the data comes cascading down the screen then at least you know it is getting into the laptop.

(check the 10.10.10.1:10110 I openplotter wifi tab)

John,

are you sure that you a good connection ? You can take another wifi station or your own wifi, to find out if your browser works.

In Linux there is a setting for serial communications you, these must be allowed in de dialout mode.

I don't think it is the solution but it is simple to try and does not have any side effects.
sudo usermod -a -G dialout MY_USER_NAME (user name still marinux ?)

If you have a network at home you can simple plugin the ethernet cable is
choose the IP adress you can see in OpenPlotter.

I'am sure we find a solution.
