Onwa AIS to multiplexer issue

Good day all:

I recently purchased an Onwa ks-200a class B ais transceiver. After a bit of back and forth with onwa, I finally have the unit receiving and transmitting properly. The unit provides a data output via an rs232 cable. Consequently, I am able to connect the unit to my computer and use it successfully with opencpn. The issue for me is that I would like to send the ais data to my digital Yacht wind sense unit. The wind sense is a multiplexer that can handle input via NMEA 0183 at 34800 baud—according to digital Yacht. According to onwa, the ks-200a transmits NMEA 0183 messages at 34800 baud and can be connected directly to a nmea 0183 multiplexer. But, when I connect the ks-200a output to the wind sense input, the wind sense does not recognize or display any ais data. In an attempt to get the units to talk to one another, I got an rs232 to rs485/422 adapter from amazon. It doesn’t seem to work and I am lost for thoughts on this thing. I have read NMEA 0183 explanations on this forum but it hasn’t really helped me figure out how to get this thing working. Any help would Ben greatly appreciated!! Cheers

Re: Onwa AIS to multiplexer issue

I doubt a wind speed gauge is going to show any ais data...

It likly only looking for heading and stw for true wind readings.

Re: Onwa AIS to multiplexer issue

To be clear, the wind sense is an anemometer that also acts as a multiplexer. And, according to the manufacturer, the unit can handle ais inputs in NMEA 0183 format.

So it takes the ais data input. Combines it with the wind data. And will output both on the same output port. Hook your computer to that port and you'll get ais and wind data to pc on same port. That is what a multiplexer does.

The unit is not multiplexing the ais data—that is what I am trying to convey with this post. I need help trying to get an instrument that speaks rs232 to talk to an instrument that speaks NMEA 0183.
