Odd Reported Wind Speed/Direction

The pic of my Triton2 was from a week ago. I had been on a port tack, then gybed to starboard. My sense was neither the wind speed nor direction changed. However, as shown in the pic, the instruments reported large changes in both over a few minutes, then settled back to what they had been.

What the heck can be causing this?

Re: Odd Reported Wind Speed/Direction

Does the Triton calculate true wind from apparent wind based on boat speed through water? If so, it's possible the paddle wheel got stuck for a short while, resulting in an incorrect calculation.

Re: Odd Reported Wind Speed/Direction

Hard or impossible to tell because of insufficient data.
To get a more complete image would need boat speed thru the water, then SOG, heading, AWA , AWS .
Given the very light wind between 2.5kn -5.8kn boat speed both thru water and over ground had to be very slow, maybe 1-3kn and any paddlewheel , GNSS errors can lead to large swings in the calculated TWS, TWD, compounded by any current and vertical wind gradient etc.
In these light conditions and slow boat speeds both wind and boat speed measurement errors become significant and may even dominate the results.

Depending on where your wind sensors are located, they can have dead spots if the wind is blanked out by the mast. Sensors are typically mounted near the top and on the forward face of the mast. This can produce inaccurate results with a following wind. Although, the pic shows a pretty long duration for the anomaly, unless it was a really slow gybe.

It was a normal gybe. You may be right about the vane becoming shadowed. Out sailing this afternoon, so I can check.

Re: Odd Reported Wind Speed/Direction

When you gybe the air from main washes over the vane. TWS is calculated from AWA and boat speed data. Hence the bump at about the moment you were pulling in the main, gybing and easing the sheets on the new tack.
