Ocens and Cruisenet costs in windwards

Has anyone heard about the systems from ocens and cruisenet where you can get unlimited access to the internet via your computer for about $60 per month. My concern is that there will either be no coverage in the leewards and windwards or there will be incremental roaming charges.

The system looks like it would be $1,400 new and $60 per month. That might be OK for true unlimited access, but I am concerned about significant roaming charges tacked on.

You will get KILLED on roaming costs and have slow access in the Caribe. This is a system that works well in the US coastal areas...not suitable for general internet access down island.

I use Ocens for email on a Globalstar phone and laptop. Globalstar after the first of the year will be $30/ month for unlimited service until their new array of satellites is up. The down side is the cost of the phone, outside antenna, and computer interface box - about $600. Check with SeaTech - they usually have boat show specials. Ocens is about $240/year for an account including weather service. The connection can also be used for internet access when WiFi isn't available (at 9.4k - faster and cheaper than Iridium). You should note that WiFi is frequently available for a fee in anchorages or free ashore in bars or eateries. For example Shrimpy's, Ric's and others have free wifi in Simpson Bay, St. Marten.
