New Program for Navionics on the iPad

I downloaded an update from Navionics last night and and comes with a new program option, or app for about $5.

The extra program enables routes multiple waypoints ETA etc. I have not used it in anger yet but it looks very useful.

Here is a screenshot from my iPad with the new program.

If you have downloaded the charts for your area you can use the app without wifi.

Provided that your iPad has the 3G system. The 3G system alows the GPS function to work with out wi-fi.

If you have a non-3G version you can get a small Bluetooth GPS for iPad. Works just as well.

We used an non-3G iPad and two iPhones with Navionics and iNavx all the way across the Atlantic this summer. Never even turned on the Garmin and the old chartplotter. No need. The iThings did everything we could have wanted.

I preferred iNavx over Navionics in the ocean, but Navionics close to shore. This new update to Navionics seems to level the two apps quite a bit. INavx will display AIS and gribs so still has an advantage.

You were able to get 3G in the middle of the Atlantic? Who is your iPhone or iPad carrier? We are just going from the BVI to St Martin. Do cell towers give 3G out there?

iPads and iPhones have GPS built in so you dont need a connection.....just like your regular GPS unit, no connection needed.

No. The chipset which is used for the GPS functionality also provides the 3G (both on the same chip). This is why the GPS Isn't available on the non-3G version of the iPad.

Unless you get a bluetooth GPS for a non-3G iPad, then it works the same as a 3G iPad for these Nav apps. I haven't checked the prices lately, but I believe a non-3G iPad plus bluetooth GPS is cheaper than a 3G iPad and the bluetooth GPS can also work with a laptop for OpenCPN for example. We happened to already have the non-3G iPad before Nav apps were available.

We use an XGPS 150. It works quite well and is dead simple to set up with the iPad.

Anybody using a mux to supply data to an iPad? What results? What app(s)? Where do you download the charts?

You can add waypoints and create a route if you want.
It's difficult to enter waypoints from a lat and long, but normally you would be using the map anyway.
The functionality and customisation is still not as good as a chartplotter, but it will do most things reasonably well.
The strengths are very cheap maps (and cheap hardware) and the fact that its self contained with its own GPS and long battery life.

It is a lot to offer in a package that is also allows you to connect to Internet, sent emails make skype calls read books and magazines.
