Re: Need used SSB

pdenton,
If you could let us know what your exact application is...

And, especially:
--where you are located...
--where you will be sailing, etc...
--what your electronics knowledge is, what your communications experience is...
--whether you will be doing the installation yourself, etc...
--as well as your budget, etc...

And we could probably get you pointed in the right direction....

Without any of that, I'm not sure what / who to recommend, nor where to send you....

You will find some used M-802's for about $1000 USD (without the AT-140 tuner), or up to $1500 (with the AT-140 tuner, etc.)....and you can also find some older (non-HF-DSC) Marine HF SSB radios (such as the Icom M-700Pro or M-710) in the $500 - $700 range...

Please answer all the above, and we'll point you in the right direction...

Fair winds..

John

I have a 35 foot cutter and wish to spend long periods of time starting this November in the outer islands of the Bahamas And God willing through the Panama Canal.
When I was younger I sailed a 60 foot gaff-rigged cutter. In those days our technology was the sextant, compass, and the only electronics, a depth finder. I spent most of my time in Melanesia and retreated each year to Australia.
Being mildly dyslexic there was no hope that I could pass the Morse code,So I didn't even have an amateur radio.
Since I was born on Pearl Harbor day, I feel that reliable communication is a must.
Although cost is not the first consideration, I wonder how I could test the reliability of a second-hand model. Likewise I have no idea where to find a secondhand SSB except perhaps on this forum.

Re: Need used SSB

pdenton,
I combined the answers to your questions regarding "weather forecasts" and "need used SSB", into your "Weather Forecast" thread....
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post2138351
Where you will find a good deal of info, as well as plenty of links to LOTS of info, and especially lots of videos to watch!

But, in a nutshell....how important is the "antenna tuner"?

It is VERY important, actually vitally important in any Marine HF ("SSB") transmitting system....meaning if you wish to communicate to others, the antenna tuner is what allows your radio to work on the various bands/channels/frequencies, using one simple antenna (such as your backstay, or whip)...

But, if all you need to do is RECEIVE signals, the antenna tuner is NOT needed at all...

If you look at the other thread, read all the info referenced there, and especially watch the videos, you'll get a good education on all of this, all for FREE!!
