NASA marine LTd engine AIS receiver

Hello all, being frugal I've been searching for a used AIS receiver to compliment my plotter and found the NASA Marine engine on eBay for 60 buck CDN. Has anyone used this model before or did I buy a dud? It apparently uses one channel and switches between A and B frequency every 36 seconds . I figured it was cheap enough to take a chance on and hope it does the job.
