Mystery Radios

Hello: I'm new here and will make my first post a question. Recently, a friend's widow gave me four (4) SMR Sea Lab 9600 handheld vhf marine radios. The radios have not been used for at least 7 years. They were used for about 5 days per year over a five year period.

Of course, the batteries,12v/600 mah nicad battery 10 packs, dated 10/11/93, were cold stone dead. However, after a 16 hour charge, all of the radios functioned perfectly. My question is twofold: Does anyone know anything about the quality of these units and perhaps more important, are battery replacements available anywhere? Any and all input would be appreciated. Thanks, Stoneybroke

Stoney-
Try also contacting Bulldog Battery 800-721-1119 (Ohio), and The NiCad Lady www.nicdladyonline.com/ both rebuild battery packs and often can rebuild with better batteries for a lower cost than replacement packs.

Generally once NiCads are ten years old, even if they appear to charge well they won't hold the charge very long, and they have a fraction of the original capacity. If you can fully charge and discharge them a couple of times (by leaving them on "receive" with the squelch turned off) and they work well enough...You can keep the old batteries. (And buy a lottery ticket while your luck is running.<G>)

SMR

The woman that gave me the radios found one of the original boxes yesterday. The address/telephone for SMR is still the same as listed above. Surely, with all the information you provided, I'll be able to resusitate these radios! I was surprised to see that the RF output power is 6.5 watts/1 watt switchable. I didn't think any of the handhelds went over 5 watts. Again, thanks for all your help. Stoney

Need a Thermistor for SMR2000a Radios

Hi. I just came across a set of the SMR2000a Radios. I rebuilt the battery packs as they were about dead and 1 radio works great.

The other though has a bad thermistor. Unfortunately i cannot figure out where i can get a replacement one.

The ONLY MARKINGS on it is: ROR5 G9D
It's brownish orange in color.

Im attaching a photo.

If anyone can direct me to where i might find a replacement, i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!!

T

PS... i'm cross posting this as i found a link to an older thread and i'll post there as well. Thanks again for any help.
