My older SSB

My vessel has an old Sea 222 SSB, the unit is reliable and works very well. As I don't really want to spend big dollars to install new equipment is there a problem with continuing to rely

Nope. It's a good, simple, well-built radio as were most of the SEA radios.

Of course, it doesn't have DSC, but I doubt that's much of a problem for you given what I believe is your sailing ground (U.S. East Coast).

Thanks for your response, considering that boats have been crossing oceans with pre DSC SSBS for years does it really matter if the boat crosses Atlantic without this technology?

Yes. The world is not the same.

Not so long ago, commercial vessels were required to maintain a listening watch on HF. This is no longer the case. Without DSC, an HF distress call will go unheard by nearby vessels.

I see a lot of Icom 802 installs, that do not have a separate DSC antenna, so as I understand it, they can xmit a DSC call, but will never receive the answer.
