Maybe really stupid question

We have recently bought a larger sailboat which has a hydraulic ram system for the autohelm. If you grab the top of the unit it will tilt from side to side (also front to back if removed from where it is mounted). I removed it to see if there is something to tighten down and it is not obvious, the unit seems to sit on a plate and can articulate around the center, is this normal and is designed for movement in the system? Think it is an older Simrad unit. First time I've had this type of system, thanks for any help, pictures enclosed.

Get brand and model number and google the installation manual.

Re: Maybe really stupid question

Yes, the ram body has to be able to articulate both up and down and sideways because it is connected to either a quadrant or a short tiller arm off the rudder post. The geometry of the system means that as the quadrant or arm moves, the ram body has to pivot. Connect the ram back up, move the rudder manually with your wheel and you will see how the ram body moves. As long as there is no "slop" in the system, all will be ok.

It looks like an HLD-2000 Unit that went with a Simrad AC42. We rebuilt our HLD-2000 and replaced the auto pilot with the NAC-3. Yes, the ram articulates/swivels. We love ours. Any hydraulic shop can service the ram.

Yes that's what I think it is, thank you for the responses, good to know it is not going to snap off there!
