About 200% in cost .... other wise no diff at all.

You do want to use adhesive lined for marine applications, but as with many other grossly over priced items there is really no such thing as "marine".

I suppose if the unit was exposed to the elements, e.g., rain, spray, etc. I might consider a marine unit. For other units, naa! The TV and stereo system I have below in the cabin are right off the shelf. A LG flatscreen TV and an auto stereo that I've had for years with no problem. I'll be replacing the stereo simply so the missus can plug her MP3 player into it.

The stuff with hot melt glue is going to give a much better seal than just plain heat shrink tubing. Haven't seen anything other than glue lined heat shrink terminals. If you want to get them cheaper, these guys have the best deals and service. I've ordered a lot of stuff from them and they are way cheaper, shippingis usually free, and quick.

The adhesive lined (aka dual wall heatshrink) is great stuff. I get it in bulk from www.buyheatshrink.com. Raychem is a top supplier of adhesive heatshrink (3M too I think) but the no name stuff from the above website works great for me.

Where have you seen this distinction? I haven't seen heat-shrink described as "marine" or not... I've just seen different vendors - some with a "marine" orientation (and pricing )

Marine heat shrink tubing will come in a nice bubble clamshell package , with little boat symbols printed on, will be cut in inconvenient lengths causing waste and will be sold in high priced chandlers from little revolving chrome stands , with other handy packs like 4 stainless bolts for a kings ransom

The other will be sold in 10m rolls by raychem from a warehouse in an industrial estate.

Re: Marine vs non-Marine Adhesive-Lined Heat Shrink Tubing

If I'm concerned about water getting inside the heat shrink I put a coating of
liquid electrical insulating tape on the wire and then slide the heat shrink on top before applying heat.

The liquid gets squeezed out as the heat shrink shrinks and that's about as watertight as I can get it.

Can get very messy as the liquid takes a while to dry and stains everything it touches.

Very accurate description but I must say that you have better chandlers in your part of the world. Here they pack the bolts in 3's or 5's .

In our part of the world, these are the best priced stainless fasteners you can get....about 20% of what Whitworths charge.

Actually, regarding the screws and nuts and such, you do have a good point. In our part of the world, most of the chandlers have a wall of little drawers where you can pick out the stainless nuts and bolts and nyloks and washers and such, write the quantity and code on little bags, and march them to the front, and what was more shocking - the price worked out to less per unit than if I'd gone into a big chain hardware store and bought their blister packs. I just determined this last week. Maybe they use the hardware bins as a loss-leader...

I also appreciate that when you're at the boat and you desperately need 2 specific screws, and a store that's just a few steps from port has them... it's worth paying a premium.

ok, back to our regularly-scheduled marine-store bashing

I find that one or two trips a year to a good Local Marine store, to fill my list of stainless nuts bolts and washers, and screws,(all american by the way) works for me ! I find I can get more then a dozen ss bolts, for the cost of 4 or 5 from the Yacht Stores! some of yall need to try your local marine stores and give WM and Defender a pass !! Just sayin moneys money if it's hung on a cow !! LOL

Is American SS somehow superior to SS from other countries? Personally I would prefer SS from Europe, at least they have metric.
