Marine SSB: IC-M802 not turning on

Hello all,

I've been having some problems with an ICOM M802 SSB radio not powering up. I'm not sure it ever worked exactly as it was supposed to, but it at least used to turn on. I've tried contacting ICOM but haven't had any luck with phone or email yet.

When the power button is pressed, almost nothing happens. Occasionally, you can see some of the LCD blocks filling in very faintly before they fade away completely.

The transceiver unit is getting 13.8 volts through the power cable. I've checked both the internal and external fuses and both are good.

The next step in my debugging process would be to check that the controller unit is connected to the transceiver properly. I took some measurements from the 8-pin Mini DIN cable that goes between the two, but unfortunately that pinout is missing from the manual. Does anyone know/is anyone able to check whether these voltages I've measured are correct?

All values measured from the ground shield on the plug to each pin.
Pin 1: 0.00 VDC
Pin 2: 0.00 VDC
Pin 3: 0.00 VDC
Pin 4: 0.03 VDC
Pin 5: 0.00 VDC
Pin 6: 2.00 VDC
Pin 7: 0.12 VDC
Pin 8: 0.13 VDC

Pin numbers are based on this image but obviously their purposes may differ.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Marine SSB: IC-M802 not turning on

The correct pinout is:

1. modulation audio
2. modulation audio return (gnd)
3. ground
4. audio (receive, key beep...etc.)
5. audio return (gnd)
6. supply voltage, nominal 13vdc
7. serial data transmit
8. serial data recieve

You've got a big voltage drop there on pin 6. This 13 volts is via the fuse on the PA board.

For a complete wiring diagram go to the ICOM manual page 61....

The manual can be downloaded here for free

The user manual doesn't provide pinout info for the control cable, that's only in the service manual.

Re: Marine SSB: IC-M802 not turning on

Thanks a lot fairbank, that is exactly what I was looking for.

I was hoping that signs would point to the controller being bad rather than the transceiver, but this at least gives me a good starting place to try to figure out what is going on.

Thanks again.

Mine does... A picture of the control cable with a detailed description for each pin.

Page 61 of the instruction manual, which is located at the link I provided...

Re: Marine SSB: IC-M802 not turning on

Eric,

I think that you may be mistaking the 8-pin DIN accessory jack for the 8-pin Mini DIN controller jack. If you look at page 4 of the user manual you linked, you can see the ACC jack that the page 61 pinout refers to (labeled as number 4). My question was about the controller jack, labeled as number 5.

For whatever reason, the controller pinout was deemed unnecessary for this manual.

Contact your local Ham radio club, they can fix anything and they do it for the fun of it.

Your right... Sorry

The manual lists the pin diagram for all connectors, but the Controller....

Here is a link for the ICOM 802 Service Manual in PDF format that may help you out
