Looking for ideas - will build & supply a free one if your idea accepted

We are a New Zealand manufacturer of marine electronic instruments. We are looking for new products to manufacture for this market.

If you have a good idea for a new marine instrument (that we are not already building) send us an email or drop the idea here in the Cruisers Forum.

If we like the idea we will develop it and send you a copy at no charge.

Best Regards,

Bert van den Berg

Welcome to the forum Bert and a kind offer indeed.

Below are two pictures, one is of what my main switch board looks like now and the second is what I'd like it to look like. And yes I would really like the little mast leds to shine when the nav lights are on.

Obviously there would need to be a handful of differing options available, a hinging method, and of course of singular importance is what is on the back. Ideally too, the display(s) configurable for different languages and for all the various CruzPro sensors (I'd certainly want exhaust temperature and fuel tank level for example.)

Hi Grant,

Thank you for your product idea submission. I agree the panel on the right looks a lot nicer than the one on the left.

Our company is an electronic instrument manufacture but have no experience in mechanical hardware design or manufacture. I suggest you contact

https://www.navico.com/our-brands/bep

They manufacture instrument panels and may be interested in you panel layout.

Regards,

Bert van den Berg

An engine exhaust temperature gauge & alarm. Basically a thermistor and alarm kit. Strap or clamp on to mixing elbow. User config for alarm temperature. Completely independent, with 12v dc power for alarm. And NMEA link to display exhaust temp.

Hi OZwingle,

Thank you for your suggestion but we already manufacture the PY60 exhaust temperature gauge with NMEA output, see https://www.cruzpro.com/py60.html

Bert

This may be out there but I wish I could buy a fiber optic gyrocompass. There are a lot of heading sensor options out there for yachts but they are all basically just a fluxgate. The only option currently available that isn't magnetic is GPS-based.

It seems strange that fiber optic gyrocompasses have been around for many years (patents should be expired) and their components that I'm aware of are all commercially available, but they are not available for yachts.

I've considered trying to buy one stripped off a ship at Alang and seeing if I can get it working.

Thanks,

Will look into this if it's not too complicated. We have no experience with fibre optics so can be a challenge.

An anchor chain orientation display panel so the helm can see where the anchor chain is in relation to the boat, elminating need for crew to point . I imagine there would need to be some form of metal sensor near the chain roller that could be calibrated for the chain drop angle. The skipper would then know if he is overunning the chain or it has moved to one side or it is out in front. The display could also show length of chain remaining if connected the chain counter. A camera could do the same job if lense could be kept clean.

You can simply order that from FrontPanel Express. The software to design it with is free and available for download on their website.

I notice that you have a wind instrument and sensor, and depth/sonar transducer.

A large number of people here have/have had airmar ultrasonic speed sensors and are dissatisfied the the high cost and high failure rate. I have had two airmar ultrasonic speed sensors, and after the last one failed, won't buy from them again. If you offered one that was reasonably priced and didn't fail in the first 5 years, I think you could sell tons of them.

Re: Looking for ideas - will build & supply a free one if your idea accepted

1) Upgrade all of your 4 inch dedicated and MFD displays with a single, wireless, networked E-Ink display that can be programmed to display any of the data now displayed from your Max110, WSD110, MaxRP110, SLT110, etc. Make them solar powered with lithium backup. High-contrast daylight-readable E-Ink with a backlight for night. Wireless to a hub with BLE. While you're at it, updated to NMEA2000 from 0183. Orca makes an E-Ink wireless chartplotter, but not instruments.

2) The autopilot world has a gap in it between Raymarine/Garmin proprietary units and PyPilot/DIY stuff. A course computer plus head unit compatible with everyone's tiller rams, quadrant rams, etc (the high-power stuff).

Just a couple of ideas. If you make a zillion, you have to buy me lunch the next time I'm in NZ.

Thank you for the suggestion, but no help there. just a massively complex web site supporting a major US multi national with many brands.

The board I pictured is from Phillipi, based in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, but all models are priced at over €1,000.
Ridiculous really as the panel front is a simple design and seemingly a basic etched design.
https://www.philippi-online.de/en/pr...panel-stv-258/

So given your contacts Burt there would be a market there. A similar panel with a launch design with nav lights and a half dozen switches would sell (I predict) like hot cakes through the likes of Burnsco.

But Bert does your company sell from your web site? or only through distributors and retailers?
