Re: Looking for a Mast head camera

I'm interested in this also. Not primarily as a safety device but to get good video footage

Ideally I'd want to be able to

a) look down to see what's next to the boat as well as how the sails are set, and
b) look up/forward/back to get the scenery.

I think it's impossible to do this with just one camera?

Anyway, to get decent and reliable bandwidth (for good quality video) I thought it would be best to do it with a PoE cable through the mast.

Don't know, but following with interest!

Re: Looking for a Mast head camera

Any recent camera will do, search Amazon. I would connect it to the anchor light for ease of installation. My issue with the wifi cameras is that there is a delay of around 0.5 seconds due to the compression and decompression routines, less so due to wifi latency.

Instead, I use a regular analog camera mounted on the bow that displays the image in real time either to the TV in the saloon or a dedicated monitor. The quality is not as good but the motion is in real time. You can even try to dock the boat from the saloon, using autopilot controls and watching the TV screen. Not that I have tried it but may be one day if I am feeling lucky...

Are the Garmin cameras reasonably priced? I imagine possibly not.

Re: Looking for a Mast head camera

Any update? Would be handy navigating solo in search of Anchorage in shallow waters.. and yes for some helping in docking manoeuvers where the overview is lacking. If someone is happy with own solution and may describe the setup, would be great!

@mglonnro, for a good video footage, maybe you need a drone?
They're a lot of fun
