Log paddle wheel kit

Hi all, looking to replace a broken paddle wheel on my Autohelm ST50 log. There are a few kits available on eBay, but they all have different part numbers and no description of how to identify the log unit that it is for.
Also tried to locate more information on the Airmar website, but still no luck.
It measures 31mm diameter &
Anyone know what this unit is?[IMG][/IMG]

Any advice of what it is, how best to fix/replace or fins cheap kits would be very much appreciated.

Re: Log paddle wheel kit

(Did you save the broken bit? You could just epoxy it back on...)

Assuming you have an Airmar transducer (it looks like an Airmar paddlewheel) the perfect replacement is to get the transducer model number and order the correct wheel from that.

The paddlewheel is a magnet and and there's a Hall effect sensor in the transducer body that picks up the wheel's rotation (I know this because I dissected and rebuilt one once ). So a replacement wheel essentially just has to be the same size and fit the same size axle.

Is there a busy marine electrician near you? He/she may have some paddlewheels salvaged from dead transducers.

Re: Log paddle wheel kit

Thanks Lake Effect,
I had not thought of trying to find a second hand wheel. As for the model number, there doesn't seem to be any numbers printed anywhere on the log, hence my asking here.
The paddle was broken off when I bought the yacht, so no chance of gluing it back on.
Will try Airmar and hopefully they will be of help.

Thanks again!

Re: Log paddle wheel kit

There might be an Airmar product label somewhere on the transducer cable, close to the far end where it connects to the ST50.

[edit] according to this link, here's the transducer part number:

airmar part#31-250-1-42, manufacture #Z092P

I also found this: Airmar 31-275-5 Speed and Temp Insert for ST50 5-Pin

Hope this helps.

Re: Log paddle wheel kit

Oh yes, only a partial tag left, but got the part number 31-250-1-41, but unfortunately no reference on the Airmar website and not much in the way of the rest of the web either. Would wheels be interchangeable between different logs if the dimensions are the same? You mentioned that they are magnetic (that would explain the relative weight compared to the size of the wheel).
Found this kit on eBay.
Thank you again for the great info! :-)
