Is this for MF / HF?

I am going through the systems on a second hand yacht. I have been told that this is an emergency antenna for marine MF/ HF transceiver. Can anyone confirm this? Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Is this for MF / HF?

Given that the plastic wrapper says "Satellite Antennas", I'd assume that it is an emergency antenna for a satellite phone or similar device in the L band. i.e. UHF.

It appears similar in size to this iridium antenna:

But then again, here's a VHF emergency antenna that looks similar:

Re: Is this for MF / HF?

Any other identification on it anywhere - part number - model etc ???

Certainly doesn't look like any MF/HF emergency that I have ever seen but...

Failing any better way of knowing, I would plug it into my VHF and see if receives any distant stations.

This assuming you don't have a SWR meter or similar to check it when transmitting.

"Satellite" is the brand; that's an emergency VHF antenna. So that you can use your fixed mount VHF radio after being dismasted.

Greetings and belated welcome aboard the CF, Mike.
Looks like an emergency VHF antenna, to me.
(I see Dockhead beat me to it)

Re: Is this for MF / HF?

One clue that it cannot be any kind of satellite antenna is the PL-259 connector. Standard for marine VHF but not used for satellite antennae. Too much attennuation at satellite comm frequencies.

Re: Is this for MF / HF?

ditto vhf antenna.
marine hf radios generally require an antenna tuner which is generally connected to an isolated backstay.

if the backstay or mast was lost the antenna could just be replaced with a suitable length(~23ft) of single core wire.

if the tuner was not functioning a simple dipole antenna connected directly to the hf radio would work for some bands and allow transmission of a distress signal
