I would sign up for a week or month depending on travel plans.

VOIP needs an
internet connection. As long as it's fast enough with good latency, it doesn't matter if it's
wifi, cellular, landline, tin cans and a string...whatever.
Keep in mind with a lot of these comments:
- Some people missed the VOIP aspect. If you are just downloading
email, you can get by with some pretty marginal
wifi but when you try VOIP, the connection can be horrible or it can keep dropping the call.
- Some of the good wifi responses assume PAID wifi. You would have to check the individual pricing plans but I've found most are fairly expensive unless you are in one place long term or you need a massive amount of data transferred over a short period of time. By itself, VOIP uses data but you can do quite a bit of talking on a gig of data.
- Free high speed is a lot less common on the
water though you can often go to the local library or a coffee shop and use theirs but that's not really what you were after with a range booster.
