iridium go! exec

We are looking to purchase an iridium go! exec.
It can be installed with an external antenna. The manual states that the external antenna should have a clear view of the sky, which is a challenge on our boat as our bimini is covered with solar panels.

When doing a longer passage (no external antenna) we could just take the unit outside , download the weather, update GPS position and stuff like that.

I am wondering if people have experience with using the unit without the external antenna. Will it catch the signal when mounted inside?
Our GPS is also mounted inside and this one has no problem catching the signal.

here is our cockpit. The red mark is where I would put the external antenna but I assume the interference of the solar panels might be too much?

Re: iridium go! exec

I don't have the external antenna on my exec. I just leave it under my dodger, worked fine for my tracking and seemed to have plenty of signal on my Pacific crossing. Keeping it down below decks was definitely not as good, it would seldom get signal.
I did not use it for anything else, used starlink for communication. But the exec uses very little power and could be left on 24/7 for tracking. It was backup if communication was necessary.

Re: iridium go! exec

I had the external antenna but the cable that came with the kit was so stiff it was hard to run. I ran out of time before our trip to the Bahamas do do anything else so never installed it. We used it reliably, most of the time sitting on a shelf above the nav station periodically sending out position messages. If I had longer downloads to make I would put it up under the dodger. I never found it useful for phone calls, even when I set it up in our backyard with the antenna for testing. It could have certainly been something in my configuration. Texting was adequate for our purposes.

I am somewhat envious of all those starlinks. On the other hand that is a little too connected for my taste.
