Iridium email

Hi
can anyone tell me what is the fasted method to send and receive email via Iridium phone. Is it best to use the iridium direct internet data functionality or to dial up and use a email client such as "MailaSail" or "Ocens".

Many Thanks,
Rijk

XGATE

When I went south a few years ago I had a GlobalStar satellite phone and used XGATE and it worked great and their service was exceptional. They also have a version for Iridium. See:

iridium email

I use mozilla thinderbird. Theres a handy setup utility here MailASail | Support / Downloads browse
Seems quick to me though never timed it yet. I also use the free email gribfile service here Home Page
Costs of xgate look like I would have to send a lot of emails for it to save me money.

uuplus is the best

I would not use the direct connection.. way too slow. We use uuplus via our iridium phone and we get weather (saildocs gribs and buoyweather txt), update our blog
(including location) and send/receive a couple emails, all in less than a minute.

Geeky reply to why XGate is a good idea

You might want to look at this thread.

You will find a nice and long detailed report called "
Geeky reply to why XGate is a good ideal. It discusses all the pros and cons for using xgate (and other satellite based compression agents) vs. direct internet.

Take care.
