I did throw mine overboard, well dropped it.
The next day drove to town and gladly spent $300
for it's replacement. If you don't have an iPhone
you wouldn't understand...

LOL! Mine is at the bottom of the Two Harbors inlet at Catalina Island. I wouldn't allow anyone to talk to me about it until I replaced it, although the wife and kids did manage to put in jabs whenever possible.

iPhone apps

In response to FSMike, I felt the same way when we went cruising the first time in the early 90's. Two years of prep., two courses in Celestial Navigation, Off shore seminars, etc. I was a Purist. NY Boat show, Garmin GPS special, under $1000. Decided to break the budget. Now look at navigation.

Last summer we where thratened with a potential Hurricane here in the NE. I wished for better information, didn't bring a computer with us on our two week cruise. The iPhone is just a tool. Use it how you want, or not at all. I don't need constant contact, but to have the resources available, especially at a time of need, makes it very valuable. Add on all the apps, not just for sailing, but for everything from researching an online manual to just simple entertainment makes it a value.

We are heading out again this fall, and that is why I am interested in apps that are useful.

I'd rather use the "off" button whenever I wanted than be in a situation where I needed more information and didn't have the tools to get it easily because of some image I was trying to create for myself.
