Ipad 12v charging issues.

Giddy all, looking for some advice when using my iPad 3, seems my normal 12v charger won't keep up with the usage while turned on and will slowly run down the battery when plugged into 12v, even when charging overnight and the ipad is off, it takes over 12 hrs to charge through the 12 v plug, the plug I have is the right plug as sold to me by experts?
Does anyone have the same issues or any other forms of quicker charging?

A long cord for some reason does not charge as well as one twice as short. I notice that on my androids as well. Ordered a fifteen foot cord, and it won't charge at all, just discharges a little slower.

The iPad 2 needs a charger that will deliver 2.1A @ 5v. I think the 3 is the same (although the battery is bigger).
Most other devices need much less. The iPhone only needs about 1A and the output plug is the same. So a 12v adapter will fit the iPad but not charge it well.

Have a look at the 12v adapter, it should list the output current on it.

Use the correct charger, turn it on with the screen brightness right down and it will continue to charge, albeit slowly. On multi-day passages we never turn ours off, just adjust the screen brightness and it charges fine.

Yes i have the same problem.

When the screen brightnes is way up, or on auto, the 12 volt charger wont keep up with it.
I, also, leave it on charge all night and that gets it back to 100% but, as you say, it needs a long time!

Now the solution has been to use a small 150watt 12 volt to AC inverter for a car. That supplies more current and keeps the iPad at approximately the same charge when the brightness is up and the screen permanently on, like when i have it on deck navigating.

I do try to click the screen off when i dont need it for a few miinutes.

For navigating outside one really needs a dedicated power set up for it.

Its a pain!

The iPad 3 does use more power than the 2.
My iPad 2 still charges. I just turned the brightness up to full and its on 12v.

Most 12v USB chargers only supply 1 amp per port. There are now some rated at 2 amps that might do a better job for you.

Same experience here with longer cords too.

What others have said: Get a higher amperage charger. Note that Apple's charger for the iPad is different than those for iPhones (4s and earlier) to handle the additional power required.

I just switched to an iPad mini, and am happy to report that it charges a lot better than the full sized versions, especially on a 12v charger. We are a 2 iPad + 2 iPhone family, and never go to sea without the Griffin PowerJolts.

+1 for getting the high amp charger. This isn't an iPad issue, it's pretty much any piece of equipment larger than a phone that uses a USB charger. If you look on Amazon you'll see several options. I like the hardwired USB plug/cigarette lighter style.

Using the inverter with the AC charger will work very well, but it's very inefficient. For some that have sizable systems, 5 or 8 watts wasted (totally guessing at that number), that's no biggie. For me, I can't spare that, so a proper USB charger is a must.
