InReach SE v. InReach Explorer

I am getting ready to replace my SPOT II and III, after using it for more than 10K sea miles. The two-way communication is a welcome feature for my family at home.

I intend to get the SE model. But not sure if the Explorer model is better for us (Mariners). I don't see the advantages of that Explorer offers. Just wanted to check with other sailors. I welcome your comments.

TIA

Re: InReach SE v. InReach Explorer

I think it depends what you intend to use it for.

I bought the Explorer in May together with the extra battery and the solar charger. I am very happy with it. It has provided me with the functionality that I need and served me well across Bay of Biscay during the English Channel etc.

Re: InReach SE v. InReach Explorer

I have the SE.
The explorer is begining the map version and starting to look like a GPS. But the screen is so small I'm not sure I would like it. Thats what the iPad is for as far as I'm concerned. Although with the explorer you can set way points.

DeLorme seems to have good customer service. One of my direction buttons quit working so they replaced it for free, but I did have to pay shipping.

Re: InReach SE v. InReach Explorer

I purchased a near new InReach SE off eBay. Just got it today and being charging now.

I did not aim for the Explorer model same reason as delmarrey. My primary objective of InReach is two-way texting and tracking.

Thanks Gentlemen for the comments.

Re: InReach SE v. InReach Explorer

My boat has integrated NAV systems so I just got the inReach SE. There is a page that gives the traditional GPS Coordinates LAT/LON so you can plot on a paper chart. The display is very small so chart integration works best using a smartphone/ipad. I'd recommend you save a couple bucks and just get the inReach SE.
