But, from its specs and from at least one review, it would seem pretty useless for sailing/cruising:

I'm particularly wary of inexpensive night vision stuff, as some years ago my wife wasted a few hundred $$ on a Russian night-vision device. It's worthless on the boat.

The newest technology NV devices might be fine, but they cost $000s, not $00s.

was thinking might be helpful at close range...anchorage/river bank...maybe not.
I think my wife bought same/similiar russian unit, as yours did years ago, as well...used a few times to spot unlit markers...but kids had loads of fun, at night, in woods behind house.
flir= $14,000. and they better be...the best
hornet= $149.
one may come to conclusion they are limited,
or not worth the 149. Anyone out there have used one.

I have a cheap Russian made 1st generation NV scope. Fun to play with. It might be of limited utility on the boat as hugosalt points out. Their resolution is poor, which limits the distance at which objects can be resolved, and they are easily overwhelmed with point sources of bright light so not much use in a harbor. Infrared scopes, like FLIR offers, are far better choices for far more money. They now cost about what high quality 2nd generation night vision scopes cost 20 years ago.

A 3rd generation night vision scope might be more useful, but they are much more expensive and I think still not as useful as the FLIR products.

Gen 2+ NVDs are pretty good and cheaper than FLIR.
