Icon m402 VHF replace

Hello all,

Just bought a 2000 Bavaria 34.
Seeming the display of m402 is out of working, I would like to replace it with a new VHF which is also compatible with my remote controller microphone at the helm.

But m402 is a 20 year old product which is stopped production any more.

So, would like to seek for advise from all of you if there is any price reasonable model can have the similar size that I can still use the same panel hole without cutting it bigger. And which also have a remote controller microphone.

Thanks a lot!

Re: Icon m402 VHF replace

Welcome to the forum.

According to the Icom IC-M402 manual that IC-M402 radio supports a HM-127 remote control microphone connected to the rear panel. That HM-127 microphone includes a OPC-999 20' extension cable and up to 2 OPC-999 cables can be added.

It looks like that HM-127 has been discontinued. That microphone is available used on eBay.

Re: Icon m402 VHF replace

A couple of years ago we replaced an Icom M-422 with an Icom M-506. I don't know if the 422 and the 402 share the same dimensions, but I believe the 506 slotted right into the same opening. However, and this is the real reason for my post, we had a remote microphone outlet for the 422 near the helm. Even though the new remote mic for the 506 was different than the old remote mic, they had the same connector and the new one simply plugged into the old outlet. While you may have to replace the remote mic when you buy a new radio, try plugging it in to the old outlet before pulling new wires.

Re: Icon m402 VHF replace

I purchased a new to me Hunter 46 recently with an Icon m402 VHF radio. Since I could not confirm the MMSI number or program in a new one I replaced it with a relatively compact Standard Horizon GX2200 radio ($300) and CMP31RAM3+Mic ($100) at the helm. The new vfh radio allowed me to program a new MMSI number (dedicated to the boat) and came with a AIS receiver and GPS. I think these were valuable upgrades. This was the smallest radio I found but still required enlarging the cutout in the navigation station. It also required a new cable and connections for the mic at the helm. The ICOM mic and cable were not compatible. Antenna was compatible.

Nice! Let me check if the dimension is similar. That's the thing I need, plug into old outlet avoiding pulling new wires. Thanks for your advise

AIS will be essential for my offshore expenditure. My chart Potter is A95 from raymarine. Is it compatable?

Suggest checking with the VHF manufacturer and Raymarine dealer whether the Raymarine A95 chart plotter is compatible with your new VHF. I have a Raymarine E120 at the helm and E-80 at the nav station. That question prompted me to check with Standard Horizon and local Raymarine dealter.
