Icom M803 SSB headphones

What's the best way to connect headphones to an M803?

One way seems to be to use the external speaker jack on the back of the main unit, but this is only practical with an external speaker and a switched jack for the headphones.

Is there an easier way?

Maybe not easier, but I think the best way is to buy a headset (headphones with mic) for a HAM radio, and connect it to the microphone jack. You might not find one that just plugs in and works, though. You will probably need to change the connector on the headset.

Re: Icom M803 SSB headphones

I know this is an old post but at the request of one of my customers I recently created a headphone/audio out adapter for M803 radios. It connects between the Radio Head unit and standard handmic and allows you to connect a computer or headphones. Volume for the audio out is controlled by the main volume knob and you can optionally turn the speaker off and on with an on screen soft key.

The adapters are available on my website if interested...

Did you try out Richard’s adapter? If so what headset did you pair with it? I am looking at that as an option for my 803. I can listen to weatherfax and RTTY all day but my crew is not a fan.

I personally tested my adapter with some Denon over the ear audio headphones I have had for a couple decades. The adapter itself has mono output but my kit includes a mono-stereo adapter so that the headphones have audio in both ears. Mono is fine for connection to a computer. Kit also includes a USB Audio adapter with USB-A and a USB-C adapter.

Just shipped two more adapters today. Unfortunately they are tedious to make.
