Icom M802 and Laptop

Hi all,

I am trying to connect my Icom M-802 and laptop to get weather fax.
I am using a stereo cable from the earphone on the ssb to the mic on the laptop (don't have line in).

I tried few software but can't get the fax.

My questions are:

1. should I use a mono cable although both (SSB and laptop) use stereo?
2. should i get my "output" from other than the earphone plug?

HELP!

P.S. I do get the message "APT (or something like that) tone recieved"
tone was false and ignored

If you open "sound recorder" or simialar software you should be able to hear audio from SSB. btw, the ssb is not sterio. On the back of the ssb should be a accesory connector with a fixed audio output, this is better than the headphone output. I have an m800pro but I'm sure they have simialar o/p. You want the low level fixed
audio. Hope this helps

I've been able to receive weatherfaxes just fine using JVCOMM3 with a patch cord from the headphones jack. I think is was mono. Since I installed a Pactor TNC, I haven't used the patch cord setup for quite a while. I'm pretty sure that the M802 does not have an accessory jack like the M800 Pro.

Yes, the 802 has an accessory jack with a fixed audio output and you should use this instead of the phone jack. Consult the manual for the proper pins (2-Gnd and 5-fixed audio). The phone jack may or may not work depending on the input impedance of your laptop input. The phone jack is actually a combination phone/clone jack. Normally, it has clone data available. Only when you plug in a low impedance device such as headphones, will it switch to an audio output. If you're using the mic input on the laptop, you should use an attenuator in line as you can easily overload that input.

You could use

in order to have a proper line-in socket. Probably cheaper than an attenuator as well.

A simple 2 resistor L-pad will usually work just fine. The fixed output of the 802, 100-300mv, is less than line level so something like a 10K series resistor feeding a 1K parallel resistor would be a good starting point. You can put these resistors inside the mic plug. This has worked for me using a portable voice recorder's mic input to record cw QSO's from my ham radio's fixed output. The 1K parallel resistor would be on the Mic input side.

The Icom M-802 manual state that the earphone jack is stereo.
when I use windows recorder I can hear the signal.

This is a new boat for me and I found also the xaxero weatherfax 2000 demodulator it has RS232 on one end and mono jack on the other.
The new ones are USB.

I did try it with the weatherfax software and it recognize it on com 4 but still can get the fax!

It is a stereo jack, but is monaural audio. This way, with stereo headphones, you will hear in both earpieces.

goto Terms and Conditions - Icom America

Download manual if you don't already have it and look at page 63 AF/Mod jack
pin 4 and 5(gnd) this is AF audio freq. output already at 600ohms which should work fine straight into mic input on laptop( mine does.) level should be fine as well.

A much better bet would be to fork out for a Pactor Modem. See SCS - the PACTOR creators - controller
Then with the free Airmail/Getfax software Airmail Downloads you can send/receive emails as well as obtaining high quality fax from direct digital connection. Sailmail offers a world wide email service by non-profit making annual subscription. Winlink similar & free but you need to be a Radio Ham.

My set-up allows me to turn on/off radio, auto-select frequency according to propagation & tune radio directly from software on my laptop. The GetFax application associated with Airmail is pre-configured with all the Fax stations world wide.

You have a great rig - why not use it's full potential?

Many thanks for the links. I have also aquired a boat with the 802 and want the fax and email hooked up. Is it very difficult to get all this technology to work?

Not really the software I refer to is virtually custom written for the M802, start by reading this SailMail Primer - send me a PM if you want help.

I realize this is an old thread, but thought an update would be useful. The M802's headaphone jack serves two purposes - audio out to a headset or laptop, or communication with its cloning software. To use it for audio out, a MONO cable is required. If you use a stereo cable the radio expects to communicate with cloning software.

To use wefax software such as MScan Meteo or JVCOMM32, purchase a mono to stereo 3.5mm cable and plug the mono end into the radio and the stereo end into a line in or mic in (with attenuation disabled) jack on your laptop.
