Hydraulic autopilot pump/motors

I'm looking for the most efficient 12 volt dc hydraulic pump motor for an autopilot. My cylinder is 9.3 cubic inches and 9" long.
After much research, it appears that the Accu-steer HRP 0.5 might be the way to go because of its low power consumption. One concern is this pump is 0.5 cubic inches/second...this means hard over to hard over is around 18 seconds. Way to long.... I think. The HRP 11 offers half the speed for a 1 amp increase.
So 9 seconds, hard over to hard over.
My current pilot has a Hard over time of 4 seconds with no load.

What is "normal" for a 21 000lb full keel displacement boat. My feeling is that it does not need to be very fast because the boat is not twitchy anyway.

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Hydraulic autopilot pump/motors

If you can fit the L&S NEWAVECO to your ram it will save you a ton of energy:

LECOMBLE & SCHMITT - steering systems for sailing boats : energy saving device for linear drive - Newaveco (LS France - official web site)

Their pumps are probably among the best in the business:

LECOMBLE & SCHMITT - hydraulic marine steering systems, pumps and cylinders for boats, outboard, inboard (LS France - official web site)

They are distributed by PYI, Inc. in the US. PYI is one of the bes companies I've ever dealt with if service is of any concern.

Re: Hydraulic autopilot pump/motors

The pump has no solenoid, so that will actually not work for my application.
After looking at the L&S pump, it is no more efficient than the accusteer. The smallest one they make has an overload rating of 16 amps at 12 volts. The accusteer is rated the same.
