Hot Tip for Maretron DSM-250

If anyone has had trouble with the ground wind or GSM data on their Maretron DSM-250, here is the hot tip, courtesy of Maretron tech support:

If you have more than one GPS device on the network, the DSM-250 has a hissy fit. I have 3. One of them is the NMEA 0183 port on my nav table Zeus, which injects not only GSM data (from the AIS black box) but STW and some other data.

I assigned Instance 2 to this device, et voila, DSM-250 probs disappeared.

Cool.

All kudos to Maretron tech support, who as always were incredibly responsive and helpful, miles better than Navico or others I have dealt with.

And yes, the Maretron devices are expensive and kludgey, but essential. I think about shelling out for the N2K View software, so I can run the whole network on the boat computer. And you get for free a mobile app for Android devices.

The Maretron N2Kanalyzer software has a function to determine instance clashes and help you set these up correctly.

Yes, I have coveted that software, but it doesn't work without Maretron's overpriced USB interface, and I already have the nice Actisense one.

Ah, I did not realize that. Yes, we have the Maretron USB interface, as well as an Actisense, but didn't know the software required the Maretron.

The funny thing is that when using the software, this functionality is accessed through the virtual DSM250 instrument!

Re: Hot Tip for Maretron DSM-250

I'm back in love with my DSM-250 after the nice tech support people solved this long-standing, irritating problem.

The screens are kludgy and old-fashioned, but the flexibility of data display is unmatched by any other device I know. Here are some of my favorite screens:
