Holy Schmoly - LED lights

I recently researched getting some LED strip lighting in the cabin of our yacht. Mainly for ambience and because our boat is solid, the downside is small windows, and the cabin can seem a bit gloomy.

I looked at Lumishore Neon Flex, with a controller. 4 x 2m strips.

Holy cow - it came out at $3,800 NZD (about $2200 USD).

This is crazy pricing. Has anybody used Lumishore? What about other brands?

You can buy LED lighting strips for far less than that.

Re: Holy Schmoly - LED lights

If you don't care that it's not "marine" you can get LED strip lighting on Amazon pretty cheaply- it's designed to run on 120v, but if you eliminate the AC->DC transformer, the lights themselves are already 12v.

I put in some for under cabinet/etc, and got multi color because it can be either warm or cool white, or red (as well as other colors, but I don't really care about those.

It's crazy. 5 years ago LED's were a few cents each.
Now that they are accepted they are super expensive when made into a sellable item.

While the Lumishore product makes the marketing point that their led strips do not show point light sources, if one utilises commercial quality high density LED per metre IP65 rated strips, electronic dimmer drivers and install as non direct lighting by use of soffits or similar, the effects can be as shown and "marine use" at a fraction of the OP posted price

Re: Holy Schmoly - LED lights

Design consideration for LED lighting: Buy a strip with the 3 primary colours LED of Red, Blue, Green, and then decide on Cool White or Warm White for the 4th LED, depending on your application and area to light. With electronic controller dimmers, then the lighting colour spectrum and intensity can be changed to suit the function / time / mood. With the 4 separate LED strips the whites are really whites, not an electronic combination of the 3 primary colour LED's.

Re: Holy Schmoly - LED lights

I bought plain ole 12v "warm white" LED lighting strip - something like 10 ft for under $20. Easy to cut to desired lengths. Some strip alleges being waterproof; mine wasn't... but after attaching some leads I gave it a coat or two of clear varathane.

You can also buy cheap dimmers too.

Re: Holy Schmoly - LED lights

Our entire boat is LED, self installed including all navigation lights for around $250.
Interior lights were all 120v, we chucked the transformers and wired to 12v source ...
No problem.
