that is all you need - stay off propriarity plotters and to stay off OS troubles use linux(LXDE) with OpenCPN and CM93 Charts. You can use Navionics or others with OpenCPN too
I have to disagree with this, except the Vesper XB8000 is the must get AIS unit.

Connecting Laptops and tablets is fine. But compared to a real chartplotter at the helm, even an old one or a handheld one, they suck.

Understand that OpenCPN is my primary navigation, and I also use openCPN and Navionics on a tablet. They are great for what they are, but if you are on the helm steering, in the rain, with gusty winds and bad visibility, they might get you killed. At the helm you need more robust hardware-unless you are only a fair weather day sailor.

I have to disagree with this, and say THIS is the must get AIS unit:

Re: Help In Selecting New Electronics

I use OpenCpn exclusively now as my primary chartplotter.
I use a fanless pc connected to a Vei marine monitor, sunlight readable waterproof. Bought the monitor used, near new shape for about $300.
They are very expensive new.
Nmea is connected with Shipmodul miniplex( nmea 2k to Ethernet)
System works great.
Just purchased Simrad Halo 24 radar to add to system and removed Raymarine unit.
Have now removed Raymarine chartplotter that I had as backup, never needed it.
I cruise the Pacific between NZ and the Marshall Islands, satellite images are a must. Charts alone will get people in trouble in some of the areas I cruise.

I have some Japanese equipment (e.g. my cameras) and it all works flawlessly.

Is this some kind of pun that I missed due to my poor command of English?

Your command of English is just fine.....I don’t get it either.
