GPS receiver for Linux Ubuntu

Hi all,
I recently installed OpenCPN on Ubuntu 16.04 and bought a Glonass Ublox receiver, which the seller claimed would work with Linux.
It apparently will if I reprogram the kernel but unfortunately I don't have any almonds handy.

Does anyone know with any certainty, which receiver will work with Ubuntu?

That's what I am using on Linux mint
No almonds required.

Correction, just double checked and I am using a vk162 G-mouse.
$16 on eBay.

Add
This list says it is a ublox GPS.

Re: GPS receiver for Linux Ubuntu

I use a GlobalSat BU353-S4 with OpenCPN on a notebook that is running Ubuntu and have had no problems.

What did you do to make it work?

Ports...

Make sure all the programs/OS are using the correct ports. You might need a small program to monitor your com ports. Select the port the device it's connect to and check to see if you are getting any serial data. Forget OpenCPN right now. Make sure the OS is passing the data from the device. If so, then go to OpenCPN and make sure you have selected the correct port for the data.

This is serial data and requires all the parameters be set correctly. With my Ublox I think I have 4800-N-8-1 set on my com port on Windows 8.1.

I use the same gps and did not have to do anything but plug it in and set the baud rate. You can open the nema diagnostic window and as soon as i plug it in i can see the data streaming in. I am not saying it is a good gps because I don't know yet compared to the ublox I have been using but it does work out of the box.

>Actually that is not entirely true because you may have to give your user id access to the serial ports.
