GPS hook-up to A DSC radio

Hi there all. I'm having great problems trying to get a Uniden M525 to recognize the output from a Garmin GPS76. All of our other instruments have no problem with the output. So far Uniden service total help has been to respond that the unit uses NMEA 3.01. The GPS puts out NMEA 2.3. ANy suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you checked the baud rate setings and sentences that are prescribed for on both devices?

Been using an old Garming 75 for output to modern DSC radios as well as a Navtex receiver, no problems, but had to program the baud rate and other stuff.

The 75 does not work with a recent ACR emergency beacon however.
Found that out the hard way as the sentence or something is different.
Going to change the feed to work from a Standard Horizon plotter, but have not gotten around to it.

Anyway, Garmin has good customer support, call 'em up and pick their brains.

Baud rate and prescribed sentences

The baud rate is set and matches for both. So far it has been impossible to get any information from Uniden so I cannot check the sentence formats.

Can you give details on how exactly you wired it? Does the Uniden have a differential or single-ended input? Garmin tends to be single-ended while most everything else (and the NMEA 0183 spec) is differential.

What would I try is this - does the Uniden have NMEA+ and NMEA- inputs, or just NMEA and GROUND? If the former (differential), take the NMEA output from the garmin into NMEA+ on the Uniden, and tie NMEA- to the Garmin's GROUND.

GPS Hookup to DSC RAdio Follow-up

The radio is now hooked up and working. Thank you for your suggestions. Here is correct wirng to connect a Uniden M525 DSC capable VHF radio to a GPS, in my case a Garmin 76 which outputs NMEA 2.3.

1. Uniden Radio (+)GPS data IN wire ( white) to GARMIN/NMEA data out wire
2. Uniden Radio (+)GPS data OUT wire ( Green) to Garmin/NMEA data in wire
3. Uniden (-) Radio GPS data IN & (-) Radio GPS data OUT wires (Orange & Yellow) to GPS ground wire.

Uniden indicates that the radio "requires" an NMEA version 3.01 signal. However, NMEA version 2.3 works perfectly.

The Garmin must be set to output NEMA from the Menu page. It normally outputs a Garmin propriatary sentence. At least mine did,
