This is an annoying trend. I have a Maretron solid state compass, which has both 0183 and 2000 interfaces. When I first installed it I was able to update the firmware using 0183 and a serial adapter for my computer. I cannot now update the firmware to the newest version because Maretron no longer supports updating that way: I would now have to buy a Maretron multi-display or a Maretron USB-N2K adapter in order to do the update; they don't support the more common Actisense adapter either. That was the last Maretron device I will buy (but I will continue buying their DeviceNet cables, tees, and multiport boxes - great stuff). I like buying the Airmar devices as they do support them through the Actisense adapter, and they are also supported by most MFDs. Vendor lock-in has always undermined the N2K standard, whether it is proprietary connection hardware, firmware updating, or proprietary PGNs (the data sentences). I reward those who keep to the standards with my business (Furuno, Airmar) and I like the results.

Re: Garmin vs Raymarine

Nothing to do with quality of products, but after what Garmin did to Active Captain I would never buy a piece of Garmin equipment again.

Re: Garmin vs Raymarine

I used to like the older Garmin units but now find them too complicated for what they do with awkward software which requires you to push menu after menu to get where you want. The same goes for Raymarine. IMO, it gets pushed by a strong dealer network but it has alway been overpriced and overcomplicated junk that does it's best to get you locked into their own proprietary network. I would check out the price on the charts and then consider something more generic. I am not familiar with the latest models but I would check out Samyung or Simrad/Lowrance and then maybe Garmin if you can't find something you like. Raymarine would be my last choice.

Is there a real reason for this? As in, Raymarine is a superior tougher build, or is it just bollocks and I would maybe hear the same from a Garmin specialist talk about Raymarine.
If raymarine are the best we are doomed .....
I have raymarine and wouldn't choose the. Again.
Next time I will go with simrad or furuno

Re: Garmin vs Raymarine

Thanks. This is something I am finding out. The insurer at first said a marine electrician will do for the incident report. After talking to many people including this forum I asked the insurance company for a surveyor for an inspection as I decided the first report did not seem comprehensive. The surveyor confirmed this. I then went to another chandlery where I was talking to someone who had a major strike 2 years ago. Even with the 2 things that are still working they told me that when you have a strike like that the electrical pulse is so big that even if my radar is working - it probably wont be in a couple of months. I have also been asked by Garmin if I like their support. I had to get hold of the head office who had to ring Asia support to tell them to answer their emails. Support has been so woeful I have decided to change the system. I find the interface really good, but if something happens, they will leave you stranded in my experience to date

Re: Garmin vs Raymarine

The warnings about apparently working equipment after a lightning strike should be heeded. When I was in college a lightning strike took out our computer center, a GE mainframe running an early experimental time-sharing system. For almost a year they would repair it, run it for awhile, find new failures, and repeat. Needless to say one doesn't just replace the whole thing but in the end it would have been a much quicker solution. Once zapped solid state devices can turn intermittent, or just fail early. Be very suspicious of supposedly working equipment after a strike.

Re: Garmin vs Raymarine

Do yourself a favor, and as a backup chartplotter, get a used or refurb Samsung Note3 and install OpenCPN on it. As a second backup, a Raspberry Pi 3B running Raspbian, or a preconfigured navigationally oriented Raspberry Pi Linux. OpenCPN runs on this, too. Cheap redundancy is a good thing. If you will have radar, etc then the cost of a plotter is small potatoes and best to get same brand as the other electronics to avoid possible interconnection headaches though some brands of AIS, Radar, etc actually work pretty good with the Pi running OCPN. There is provision for displaying overlay from other instruments so you can clutter your screen as much as you can stand.

I have a garmin 7410 with a tm275 transducer and I like it for what I do. I guess it depends on what type of fishing you are doing. I have talked to Bay Marine a few times when buying electronics and are very helpful.

Re: Garmin vs Raymarine

Got a Garmin dvs 9 in my surtees. They are a pretty basic unit. But has proven very reliable, and doesnt drop out at speed and shows good sign if there are fish there.
Very happy with it. Never been a huge fan of Raymarine... you seem to pay for a lot of complicated features that the average fisho wont use. But each to there own.
Would probably go to touch for next unit.... but Garmin would be at the top of my list.

Defender Industries- (Waterford, Ct)ak- Defender does Not sell Garmin. (contrary to post#34). I was told Garmin does not allow any discounting and that is contrary to Defender's business model.
