Garmin Shuts Down periodically
Hi
A search of the threads didn't show anything up so hopefully I am not duplicating a thread.
In the last few weeks my Garmin instruments have shut down (Powered off) 6 or 8 times. All Garmin devices on the NMEA2000 power supply shut down but not the couple of non Garmin units so it looks like the system is triggering a shutdown. Power to NMEA has been checked and rechecked.
This is a major issue to me and could be dangerous if you were on autopilot with a spinnaker up, etc.
I have been told that the Airmar Triducers of a certain vintage have been failing and triggering a shutdown but I have no evidence of this being the cause and the system shouldn't shut down anyway.
I am on a recent release of SW (early 2022). Maybe I'll go back to an older version.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem and have any advice/resolution?
Cheers

Re: Garmin Shuts Down periodically
I know that our Garmin will shut off when we switch batteries, which involves a very short break in current. Some devices will stay on during such a brief interruption. Just a thought that perhaps there is some intermittent fault in your DC power. The fact that other devices stay on does suggest power is not interrupted, but may not be conclusive. You might try switching batteries with everything on and seeing how the non-Garmin devices respond.

Re: Garmin Shuts Down periodically
Thanks for that feedback. I don't think that there would have been a momentary break in power but perhaps a spike? Worth looking at as spikes or voltage drops can do strange things.
I can't actually switch batteries to test this but I will think about ways to simulate it.
Cheers

Re: Garmin Shuts Down periodically
I know that Raymarine instruments are very sensitive to voltage changes. Even with fully charged batteries and the engine running, our windlass takes ours down.

Re: Garmin Shuts Down periodically
there is nothing that "shuts down" a bunch of nmea 2000 screens. if they are turning off they are losing power

Isn't there an 'Event log' in Settings>System?

Re: Garmin Shuts Down periodically
Thanks all. I will look for an event log.
I have it on good authority from several marine electricians that a bad unit on the network can trigger a shutdown.

a bad unit may crash the bus data. nothing is going to cause nmea2000 units to power down.

Re: Garmin Shuts Down periodically
I'm not going to continue a debate about this but there is no reason why a Garmin device can't shut down all the other Garmin units if there are errors on the Data Bus.

What would be the logic in that? That would be potentially dangerous programing (given Garmins background in avionics would seem unlikely)
It sounds more like a power issue. What is the layout of your NMEA2k network? do you have a diagram? What are the lengths of the drop cables? are the terminating resistors in the correct location? Where is the power feed located in the backbone? (Yes it does make a difference)
Has this always occurred or just started recently?
if so has there ben ANY change (any even seemingly insignificant)?
Did this start after a firmware update?
Lets try to get all the details and variables together and diagnose

Re: Garmin Shuts Down periodically
Garmin does some strange things, I have documented a couple of dangerous ones and referred them to Garmin with no feedback. One, a few years ago, was fixed in the next SW release but there was no communication from Garmin advising users of the need to upgrade. Specifically the Heading sensor would go out by up to 30 deg after a few hours at sea.
My Garmin units are on two "hubs" each with a separate power supply and all of them shut down together.
I will go through a process of diagnosing it and when I find anything I'll give feedback.

Agreed…it’s a power source issue.

Re: Garmin Shuts Down periodically
If sequence of events are same in engine room prior to shut down , will be easy to rectify . Over a period of time , 6 to 8 times or in every sailing / every day ? - for observations in shut down , may give additional references . Regards .

post a diagram of your n2k network
