Garmin GPSMAP 742 Connections

My Garmin 742 is showing Fuel level at 65% no matter what amount of gas is in the Boat. Does the 742 hook up to a standard fuel sender or is it special to hook to the Garmin? Can I hook up a standard gauge to the sender in parallel?
I can't find any details on the connections etc.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum

What kind of sender do you have?

If it's just a standard sender you'll need to convert the signal to something the 742 can hear (nmea 0183, 2000, etc)

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 742 Connections

It's a Regal boat and it came equipped with the GPSMAP 742 as the standard display. So I assume the sender was installed by the factory as compatible. Does that mean then that it will not drive a standard gauge? So it sounds like i have a sender problem since it is stuck on 65%?

Did it work at one point or is this a new to you boat and it has never worked?

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 742 Connections

I just got it used but it only has 15 hours. I assume it did work when delivered. One, maybe dumb, question. Does the 742 show fuel level or fuel used. The Garnin menu page has an Added fuel entry that makes the level on the gauge rise.

Thanks

Why don't you fill the tank and then calibrate the gauge to 100% and use the boat and see what happens. This may be a calculation of engine hours rather than a float gauge.

There are several possible ways for all that to be hooked up

It could just be getting data from a sending unit in the tank. That data somehow gets put onto a NMEA 2000 backbone. It's possible the engine has it's own system and sends that data out to the 742

There could also be a flow sensor. With one of those the 742 starts out with a certain amount of fuel and deducts what has been used

Look for something like this in the fuel line going to the engine:

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 742 Connections

Without seeing or knowing that boat, I would assume there's an analog fuel gauge which comes standard, and the navigation system (Garmin 742) was optional equipment. The two wouldn't necessarily be connected in any way.

I am pretty sure the 742 doesn't have a dedicated connection for fuel gauges. Those data would come over the NMEA connection.

Forgot to mention...

If there is a fuel flow sensor it needs power to work. Look for a fuse, either inline on the wires going to the sensor or in the fuse panel if the boat has one
