Garmin GNX Wireless Wind Instrument Conversion to Wired

Can the Garmin GNX wireless wind instrument be converted to wired? Thanks.

Re: Garmin GNX Wireless Wind Instrument Conversion to Wired

Converting the battery supply to wired might be doable. Converting the wireless signal to wire sounds way beyond worthwhile. What's the problem? Does the signal not reach the receiver? I've run into that with wireless radar and had to modify my masthead mount to give the antenna line-of-sight to an iPad. Finding the antenna in the antenna was the first step.

Thanks for your reply. It works fine most of the time, but i lose the wireless signal intermittently, which disconnects from the autopilot when I have it set a specific wind angle.

Correction: ". . . have it set on a specific wind angle."

That, then, is a signal strength issue. Signal strength varies with
distance between the antennas
intervening substances such as metal frames
electromagnetic interference
signal strength
antenna orientation, and maybe something else that doesn't come to mind at the moment.

I don't know anything about your setup. Is there one or more of these that you can change to improve the tie between the two?

That must be really frustrating. All I had was my radar popping off and making an annoying "lost signal" chime. You have your boat going haywire.

In my case I determined that the antenna sending the radar signal to the iPad was in the front of the dome, and that I had a grounded aluminum frame that mounted the dome to the mast lying directly below the antenna. Cutting it out under the dome resulted in a clearer path for the RF signal.

If my memory is right, your device is designed for fifty feet up the mast. Can you move it closer and still get a good read on the wind? Is the mast between the two parts? Is there metal rather than just fiberglass between the two? Can you move the receiver so it has a better signal?

Another thought. Do you have any other electronics near either the sender or the receiver that could be interfering, such as a radio or battery charger? In a maddening situation I had, my VHF would receive but not transmit. Same situation with a replacement radio and antenna. It finally turned out that I was leaving the satellite phone sitting on top of the VHF while it was charging.....
