Garmin 2010C Chartplotter Interface With NMEA 0183 Devices

Hello CF,

I have a Garmin 2010C chartplotter and I'm trying to determine if it is new enough technology to interface with other devices such as radar and AIS via the NMEA 0183 input/output?

The unit is like brand new and it is a nice big 10" screen so I hate to replace it just because it is older technology.

I have read the manual and it references NMEA 0183 capability but also references various software revision levels.

Does anyone have a Garmin 2010C installed and interfaced with other electronics?

Thanks,

Jeff

Look on the garmin website.

Under support look for the old model book downloads to see what can be added for the MDF to read it.

Hi Mike,

I have the manuals and have talked to Garmin support but their response is the model is obsolete and no longer supported.

I'm looking for feedback from actual users that have attempted this and their success or failure.

Thanks,

Jeff

It interfaces VHF radios with DSC comms. MOB and position reports.

Barny,

I was hopeful that it would interface with my new Standard Horizon GX2200 VHF/AIS. This give me hope.

Thanks !!

I connected a Garmin 700 series to a GX2150 for AIS two years ago but can't remember how I did it. Got a different boat now otherwise would send pictures. I do remember the GX2150 being a great radio and AIS receiver.

Hmmm, GX2200 outputs DSC yes. This is interface'able into 2010.

But 2010 manual does not say AIS can be seen. I think if Garmin refuse to comment they gently say AIS is not interface'able.

Do not worry about the plotter today a sub 100 tablet does 99% of the job. Just add a waterproof jacket. Keep the plotter, get the missing functionality from your smartphone ... ;-)

PS If you use your smartphone as an AIS plotter, you need a small nmea/wifi router in between.

OpenCPN and NV Charts display AIS (I am Android)
