Forward scanning sonar

I am looking for a forward looking scanning sonar and chart plotter to install on my Morgan 45-4. I want it primarily for navigating shallow water but would also like it to useful for looking for shallow shipwrecks or other interesting things on which to scuba dive. Most of the marketing literature I have seen is confusing and sometimes misleading (intentionally?) I would like to hear from those of you who have actually used some of the products on the market today.

Where do you plan to sail? Bottom type affects quality of image.

I had an old InterPhase unit which I found essentially useless in shallow soft mud bottom around the Gulf of Mexico. Also as depth decreases, forward range decreases proportionately too.

I am now sailing in the Great Lakes (primarily Lake Michigan) but I am planning to go to Florida and the islands. Lake Michigan ranges from mud in the harbors to sand or sand mixed with clay to rock, all depending on location. I have used side scan sonar with good results but never had access to forward scanning units.

Bumping the thread...

Anyone with actual experience using:
- Echopilot 3D
- B&G forward scan
- Garmin Panoptix Forward
- Raymarine 3D transducers with Axiom?
