Fitting Raymarine a75

Due to unacceptable high charge quoted by my supplier (10 hours labor cost) I for replacing a Raymarine RC435 with a Raymarine a75 MFD I am considering fitting it myself. How difficult would this be? I confident about fitting the unit and routing the wiring etc,its making the connections which I am a little concerned about. Any comments and tips please.

The a75 is very easy to wire up. Get 12+vdc to it and you up and running.
You may have other devices to network into the MFD. Raymarine tech support can help you do that correctly.

What are the connections you want to make?

The instruments which I want to connect to;- 6002 auto pilot
and RAY 54 E radio.
I believe that the auto pilot uses the old 'seatalk' system,
and the radio uses NMEA 0183 system.
Thanks.

Re: Fitting Raymarine a75

I would not give a quote out for that installation unless I had installed the VHF and autopilot myself. There are way too many variables. I don't know what I'm going to find when I get on your boat. I just spent the morning easy-outing floor board screws that an owner put in himself. I'm a technician not a professional gambler. Yet you want someone to gamble with their time on a piece of equipment that someones life could depend on. As a professional I can't just use that previously run speaker wire that is twisted under a battery wingnut, for a power source. So If I were forced to make a quote for the job I would take the 5 hours it's probably going to take and double it to ten. The good news is at ten hours your installer probably knows what he's in for.

That doesn't mean you're not capable of doing it yourself, but if you're going to try to connect to a 6002 autopilot controller instead of the course computer you might be getting in over your head.

The last time I connected an older not supported autopilot to a newer lighthouse display with sea talk, there was some trouble. It worked but the newer display kept popping up little annoying boxes offering to do things with the autopilot it couldn't do. Your best to just give the pilot a 0183 input to steer to and leave it at that. Ray may tell you to us a seatalk to seatalk NG converter box like I did but you probably won't be happy.

Thanks for that I have noted all you say.
As I am just replacing older raymarine charplotter with a newer version. am I naive in thinking that its a case of connecting the cables from the autopilot, radio etc. Thanks
