Em-Trek B951 AIS

I killed my old AIS with RF from my SSB, since I relocated the antenna which required the coax between radio and tuner to run close by some other cabling (I have seen created greater separation and installed a bunch of ferrites).

That was a good excuse to upgrade to a new SOTDMA unit, so I bought an Em-Trek B951.

The unit I received, however, was DOA. The company, which is based in the UK, has tremendously responsive tech support. A very smart technician walked me quickly through a diagnostic procedure, then when it was clear we wouldn't be able to make it work, immediately couriered me (by DHL) a new unit, which I received in just a couple of days.

Disappointing of course to receive a dead unit -- I wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work. But nonetheless great service.

Thanks, for the 'good news' portion, of you report. Commiserations on the other.

Reminds me of the doctor, who took his patient aside, and said, "I have some good news, and some bad news."
The patient said, "Give me the good news."
"They're going to name a disease after you."

Re: Em-Trek B951 AIS

When i bought my boat, I had an em-trak b100 on it. Emailed them, super helpful really quick reply. I sent them my new number, they replied with a file and detailed instructions to update it. For a several years old unit that I had not purchased, the support was WAY above and beyond, but prevented me from having an excuse to upgrade.
Great support from them which is unusual these days.

Really good tech support is expensive to the company -- it burns the time of expensive engineers. That's why most companies cut corners with this. It's cool that these guys do not -- and their gear isn't even all that expensive. They've got my loyalty.

Good to hear about the support. I installed a model 100 on my boat when I was in the Persian Gulf. Worked well and never had an issue with it. The price was really reasonable, so I just assumed they were built in China.
