As others have said, at the price you paid (), this is a very cheap ground plane and a reasonably effective one.

As for the strap, yep 32 thou is going to last a long time. I have had good results (corrosion wise) with thinner copper strap by tinning it with ordinary 60/40 solder. Easiest way to solder it IMHO is to use a hot air gun.

Also using copper water pipe (3/4") is a reasonable option it one can't get copper strap.

Hmm...
By screen I think this is also called braid; if so, this is bad idea. No only does it corrode fast (even when tinned), it has a poor RF resistance (technically reactance). OK for DC but not RF.
