After this season we realized that LOTS of DVD movies is the best way of entertainment. So my question is, can you record DVDs that you rent from "Netflix" on your lap top. Obviously it has to have a burner on the machine, but I was wondering if there is some sort of blocking program

Think we'd hope the best blocking device was built in between your ears.

I know this kind of activity seems harmless - but copying such without authority is surely theft......

you can if you have the right programs... you'll need a decoding program to get rid of the security encryption and a shrink program so it will fit on a 4.7 gig dvd or you'll have to burn dual layer on a 8.4 gig disc which will get expensive... this will probably take an hour or two on a laptop unless it's a high end one... there are many out there that are free and work well depending on your computer setup and OS...

you should be aware however that recording of a copyrighted movie even for personal use is illegal in the US punishable by fines and/or imprisonment...

You can use programs like DVDFab HD Decrypter to backup your DVD collection to a hard drive.

You don't really need to keep a huge library of DVD's. Many of the book exchanges you'll run across while cruising also have a DVD section. Take in DVD's you've bought and viewed and exchange them for ones you haven't seen. Most exchanges don't appreciate copies. It's not uncommon for a boat to put out a call offering to trade movies and books with other boats in the anchorage.

Another use for programs like the one above is to remove the region code from a movie. The more you cruise, the more likely you'll encounter boats from DVD regions other than your own. Since you only have 5 region changes on your computer DVD player before it locks up you don't want to change regions every time you exchange a movie or buy one in a foreign port.

DVD for free removes all protection including region. Search for dvd43.
Shrink will either just shrink it or you can remove all the other rubish and just extract the movie so that it does not get compressed a lot which is good for picture quality. I am going over to Divx format and storing them on a media player which uses a lot less power than a laptop.

Anyone that cruises long enough can learn all this and more. Exchanges of DVD's is as common as drinking and eating. Get one of the new CD players that also plays DVD's or a laptop computer.
