Depth Sounder Calibration Poll.

We've seen all the arguments here.

So just answer the poll and don't bother posting another comment.

Are you implying you'd be a "nut" to not be sure?

Re: Depth Sounder Calibration Poll.

Stu you missed one: none. The "I'm not sure" is different than "none," given the comments in your link. I'm one of the guys who does none and ran aground and read the DS.

And I am VERY SURE about how my DS works and when I'll be aground.

If you mean "none" as in no depth sounder, you shouldn't be participating.
If you mean "none" as in no calibration, isn't that the same as "to the transducer" ?

I calibrate to the keel. The iPhone app doesn’t do voting

Re: Depth Sounder Calibration Poll.

Is to the transducer and the waterline not the same thing. If you set the depth of your transducer on your sounder you are the measuring actual depth, i.e. to your waterline.

Unless you set zero to the bottom of the keel.

On a transom-mounted sounder it would be; for most of us the transducer is mounted on the underside of the hull, well below the waterline.

Ok, but your point is?

I think the point is that the transducer depth and the waterline depth are NOT necessarily the same thing. You seemed to be suggesting they were the same.

Most displacement boats will have their transducers below the waterline. So to measure from the waterline you have to offset (add) this additional amount.

From your questions, it appears you are unaware that most (all?) depth sounders allow for an offset or adjustment to be made in the settings so as to measure from the waterline, or from the bottom of the keel, or indeed anything you want.

Re: Depth Sounder Calibration Poll.

Both.
I run a sounder set at keel in feet - this is the one I pay most attention to.
And a fishfinder set at waterline in meters
