compass - deviation to account for speaker interference

I have an Aviara AV32 and the Ilmor heading sensor has been inaccurate ever since I took delivery last year. It can be off by as much as 90 degrees depending on where the boat is actually pointed, and the error is somewhat variable.

Aviara said there were issues with the heading sensor's cable being routed too close to a speaker. I tried removing the speaker and the errors were significantly reduced, although it still wasn't perfect. Aviara said they used a "pre-programmed deviation" to account for the speaker.

I'm wondering if that makes sense - from reading about this, I thought the only way to fix a cable routed next to a speaker is to re-route the cable. So I was hoping someone could help me sanity-check what I'm hearing from the dealer and manufacturer.

Thanks!
Jeremy

Re: compass - deviation to account for speaker interference

In my exprience, Ilmor is engine related and Airmar is heading related.

Here is a link to a typical Airmar heading sensor installation manual. Note that they want the sensor mounted away from the radar beam and even some satellite phone antennas, and the wiring routed away from any current carrying wires.

Re: compass - deviation to account for speaker interference

the cable is not going to cause an issue. only if the compass is too close. I would not want the compass within 3' or so of the speaker.

if the deviation is the same in all directions it just needs to be calibrated.

what compass is it?
