Comnav 1500 Autopilot screen burnt out

We have a comnav 1500 autopilot on our boat and it's worked well for a while, but over time a dark circle appeared in the middle of it. For the most part, we could still read the screen, but recently it's gotten nearly unreadable.

I called Comnav, and this kit was discontinued years ago, and they don't service the screens anymore! I really hate to replace the whole unit just because of a bad screen, does anyone have any ideas what I can do?
