Comm & Weather Electronics Poll

The discussion under the current thread titled "Weather ... SSB or Sat Phone ?" motivated me to create this related poll. Much debate here about options, but what do you actually use when underway for weather info and long-distance communication?

Note you can select multiple items.

Re: Comm & Weather Electronics Poll

G'day, mate. Might I make a few suggestions before the poll gets to far along. Based on thread that you based this poll off, I believe it was for OFFSHORE weather. You might want to clarify that in your title. If you also want to include coastal weather, I would increase your options, like VHF and Cell phone connection for examples. I would also list separately, Marine and Amateur HF (and then Sailmail and Winlink respectively). Thanks for taking the initiative. All the best. Cheers.

Yes, the intent was off-shore weather not near coastal. Stated as "long-distance" in my original post. Will see if I can still edit and clarify the poll itself.

....

Nope can't edit it, but yes the intent is well offshore out of range of land-based VHF stations.

Re: Comm & Weather Electronics Poll

I ticked off SSB+Pactor and Iridium.

I could have also selected SSB, since I used to use it regularly for voice and WFAX reception. I still have the capability, but consider it a backup.

For that matter, the SSB+Pactor (and Ham Radio + Pactor) are methods I used to use often, but now these take back seat to Iridium email for WX data. I do use them occasionally, but that's just to make sure I still have them available.

I do use SSB regularly, but not for weather.

This is all for high seas sailing.
